  • Everyone loves gadgets. I wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a gadget freak, well, I would, but I can’t afford to be one…
    HP Jornada 540HP Jornada 540

The gadget that started it all. Came upon this about 5 years ago when I was working a delivery job. I found it while making a delivery and turned it in. Another driver must have left it behind and never claimed it. They gave it back to me about 3 weeks later since the batteries were dead and they couldn’t check to see who it belonged to. Oh well, I’ll take it. It’s shitty PocketPC so needless to say I used it mostly for pocket Freecell. It’s been decomissioned and gathering dust for years.

    HP IPAQ 5455HP IPAQ 5455

I picked this up as a cheap (by the time I got it) replacement for my Jornada. First thing I did when I got it was to upgrade the firmware, then flash it with linux. It’s running handhelds.org’s GPE based on GNOME. You can also see the Silver Slider II compact flash card sleeve attached.

    Seagate ST1 5GBSeagate ST1 5GB CompactFlash II Hard Drive

I got this to use in the Silver Slider compact flash sleeve. Works great though I/O is a bit weak. I’m all but certain it’s the IPAQ/Silver Slider that’s the bottleneck. In a CFII card reader it operates almost on par with a 2.5″ laptop drive.

    Nokia 770Nokia 770 Internet Tablet

If I learned anything from my experiences with the IPAQ, it’s that I have little to no use for a traditional PDA. I don’t have so many appointments I can’t keep track of them, my phone stores all of the important phone numbers I need which are backed up on my computer and I have absolutely no use for a PIM suite. Enter the Nokia 770. All the linux and internet goodness with none of the PDA crap.

    Motorola RAZR v3Motorola RAZR v3

Great phone, great reception, bluetooth, mobile internet, shitty camera, it’s got everything. The polyphonic ringtones are great for annoying the piss out of everyone within earshot with the theme to Zelda every time I get a call.

    Motorola HS850Motorola HS850

Bluetooth headset to match the phone. Great range and fantastic battery life with over 8 hours of talk time per charge. The boom on the HS850 model folds down which helps to prevent from accidentally breaking it off. It also make for a smaller package and act as an on/off switch to preserve battery life.

    Nintendo DSNintendo DS (and games)

The DS kicks ass. Always great for killing off breaks and lunch at work. There’s a pretty high turnaround for games in my town so it’s usually pretty easy to find relatively new games cheap.

Sony MDR-A30G HeadphonesSONY MDR-A30G Collapsible Headphones

I bought these in late 1996 and they still work like a champ. Great sound and they don’t bleed too much noise back out. Never know when you’re going to need headphones. I keep these with me for both the DS and 770 that can easily be too loud in most situations.

    SONY DSC-T33SONY DSC-T33 5.1MP Digital Camera

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T33 is the follow-up to the Cyber-shot DSC-T1, which was one of the most popular cameras of 2004. The T33 doesn’t change very much from the T1, aside from its refined body design and new “hybrid” LCD. The features from the old T1 that have carried over to the T33 include a 3X optical zoom lens, 5.1 Megapixel CCD, 2.5″ LCD, and point-and-shoot operation. Came with a 32MB MemoryStick Pro Duo which I need to upgrade, data cable, charging dock and a completely useless CD of windows software. Works great in linux.

"YOUNG MEN: The lowest aim in your life is to become a soldier. The good soldier never tries to distinguish right from wrong. He never thinks; never reasons; he only obeys. If he is ordered to fire on his fellow citizens, on his friends, on his neighbors, on his relatives, he obeys without hesitation. If he is ordered to fire down a crowded street when the poor are clamoring for bread, he obeys and see the grey hairs of age stained with red and the life tide gushing from the breasts of women, feeling neither remorse nor sympathy. If he is ordered off as a firing squad to execute a hero or benefactor, he fires without hesitation, though he knows the bullet will pierce the noblest heart that ever beat in human breast.

"A good soldier is a blind, heartless, soulless, murderous machine. He is not a man. His is not a brute, for brutes kill only in self defense. All that is human in him, all that is divine in him, all that constitutes the man has been sworn away when he took the enlistment roll. His mind, his conscience, aye, his very soul, are in the keeping of his officer. No man can fall lower than a soldier it is a depth beneath which we cannot go." -Jack London
